If Not For You- George Harrison, Bob Dylan and the Concert for Bangladesh

Madison Square Garden, August 1971- The Concert for Bangladesh is the very first benefit concert in rock history. This historical show was organized by George Harrison and Ravi Shankar to raise international awareness and fund relief efforts for refugees from Bangladesh following a devastating cyclone. The event’s lineup was quite impressive: Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton,  Ringo Starr, Billy Preston, Leon Russell, Badfinger and Ali Akbar Khan… Really makes you wish you were there! Apparently Bob Dylan waffled on his commitment until the very moment he walked on stage. This event marked his first concert appearance since his motorcycle accident in 1966!

Seeing the future Traveling Wilburys bandmates rehearsing this song penned by Dylan and popularized by Harrison brings pure joy to my heart. Hope you enjoy it half as much as I do.

A live album and film of the event are available.

Bon visionnement!

  1. Found this song on my late wife Susie’s phone! Im hoping to have the title included on a memorial seat for Sus on Roker and Seaburn sea front where Susie played all the time when she was young. Unlike me she had a real catholic taste in music!
Love the rehearsal version with the late George Harrison!
Sus saw The Beatles in 1963 at The Sunderland Empire when they allegedly slept on the floor of the Dun Cow pub!
